How does selling to World Jeweler compare to selling to fine auction houses, local jewelers, dealers, and pawn brokers?

• Our offers are not an “appraised value”, but an actual cash offer. Offers over $25,000.00 are paid by bank wire directly to your bank.

• Local jewelers now count on credit from wholesalers

• Dealers are in for the quick flip.

• We do not offer loans.

World Jeweler’s buyers are all G.I.A. graduate gemologists, who have specialized in large, important diamonds, and rare vintage signed jewelry for twenty five years.  Our offers are not an “appraised value”, but an actual cash offer.  Offers over $25,000.00 are paid by bank wire directly to your bank.

The major auction houses, which we work with regularly, are very reputable

They generally take up to six months to complete a sale and fund you.  They also have several fees which you owe even if the item does not sell.  If your  item doesn’t sell, you will owe money, and get your item back several months later. If you’ve been given a reserve price by a major auction house, we generally will pay you that amount immediately, with no risk.

Local jewelers now count on credit from wholesalers

You will have a hard time finding a local jeweler who will make you a cash offer.

Most local jewelers will ask that you leave the item on consignment.  In 2009, the jewelry industry had a historically high number of bankruptcies.  When someone offers you more money, but without payment or commitment, remember the bird in the hand rule.  We cannot compete with these “fictitious” offers.  We make cash offers and make immediate payment.  Be very cautious of anything else.

Dealers are in for the quick flip

Rarely will you find them registered with the Better Business Bureau. Look for stability in a company, not someone who might be gone tomorrow.

Pawn Brokers, although they have a bad reputation, are one of the more transparent options. They pay a very low percentage of the value of the item, but if your interest is to get the item back, this can be a good option.  They rely on high interest rates, but in these days of non-lending banks, it can be the only option.

We do not offer loans.  Once we make a purchase, the item is no longer available to you.  Since we have no interest in making money on the loan, we offer much more money up front.

How do you purchase my item from a different city?

If we agree to a purchase price over $25,000.00, one of our G.I.A. graduate gemologists buyers will come to you, meet you at your bank, and have a bank wire transferred into your account.

For items under $25,000.00, we may refer you to one of our affiliate stores, or arrange for fully insured overnight shipping.  Once we verify the item, and make a final offer, we will overnight a check to you.

The World Gemological Laboratory is a reputable independent diamond and jewelry appraisal service

World Jeweler, Inc, has a fully equipped gemological laboratory on site, World Gemological Laboratory.  We have the ability to identify and grade your stone with no charge to you.  You may also submit your diamond directly to G.I.A. under our account with larger diamonds.  Once we agree to a preliminary price range, we will submit the diamond to G.I.A. for same day service, then pay you immediately based on the final grade.

What if I have an appraisal, or certification other than G.I.A.?

World Jeweler Inc is a trusted source to sell your diamonds and diamond jewelry

The Gemological Institute of America has no bias, and will turn your diamond into a commodity with instant cash value.

Unfortunately, if you were to send your diamond to G.I.A., it would most likely get a lower grade.

In the case of appraisals, there are two scenarios:

For insurance replacement, the standard is benefit of the doubt.  If your diamond is lost or stolen, the appraiser wants to make sure you get at least the same quality, if not a little better than what you have.

The second scenario is simply corruption. A diamond dealer or jeweler inflated the appraisal to make the sale.  As for any lab other than G.I.A., there generally is a reason the stone doesn’t have a G.I.A. report.  Other labs are known to grade diamonds anywhere from two to five grades better than the stone actually is.  In good times, these stones were sold with no questions asked.  But as Warren Buffet said “when the tide goes out, you can see who is skinny dipping”.

Now, in this economy of sell-off, many people are realizing that they didn’t get what they paid for.  If you have a large diamond without a G.I.A. report, we strongly recommend getting one.

It is difficult to know whether the original seller, or the new buyer is being accurate in grading your diamond.  The Gemological Institute of America has no bias, and will turn your diamond into a commodity with instant cash value.

How accurate is the value of my appraisal?

Sell your earring

Your appraisal is based on high retail replacement value.  It is for insurance purposes.

Your appraisal is based on high retail replacement value.  It is for insurance purposes.

In theory, even if you got a good deal on your diamond, the appraised value should be high enough to go to the local mall and replace your diamond at any jewelry store. To do this, the appraiser puts a markup on the diamond.  Generally this is two to three times the wholesale value.

This markup is instantly lost when selling in the wholesale market.  As an example, if you have an appraisal for $10,000.00, your diamond is readily available for  $3,500.00 to $5,000.00, depending on the markup used by the appraiser.  This wholesale value is still higher than the liquidation value of your diamond, since jewelers can get diamonds at wholesale value on consignment, without paying for them.  The liquidation value of a $10,000.00 appraisal is generally between $2,500.00, and $4,000.00, depending on the markup and accuracy of the appraiser.
